Which events can you record in 3Steps?

Learn when to record goals, assists, saves, misses, technical errors, and other events in 3Steps.

When you record a match in 3Steps, you register what happens during the game. Each registration is called an event. For example, it could be a goal, a save, a technical error, or a suspension.

The events form the basis for the team's and players' statistics. Therefore, it is important to record the same situations in the same way from match to match.

Goal

Select Goal when a player scores.

You record:

  1. Who scored

  2. Where in the goal the ball went

  3. Where on the court the shot was taken

  4. Who got the assist, if the goal had an assist

  5. Who got the second assist, if applicable

  6. Whether the goal came from an established attack, fast break, or arrival

When the goalkeeper is registered in the match view, the goal is simultaneously recorded as a goal conceded for the correct goalkeeper.

What is an assist?

An assist is the last pass or action that puts the goal scorer in a clear scoring situation.

It is not necessary to record assists for all goals. If the player creates the shot themselves, select None.

An assist always involves an assessment. Two people can assess the same situation differently. The most important thing is that the team uses the same assessment throughout the match and the season.

A goalkeeper can also get an assist, for example, when a throw-out pass sends a teammate directly into a clear scoring situation. The goal scorer cannot get an assist for their own goal.

What is a second assist?

A second assist is a positive action that creates the opportunity for a goal. It is often the third-to-last player on the ball, but the crucial point is that the action had a clear impact on the scoring.

Example: Player A makes a difficult and decisive pass to Player B. Player B quickly passes the ball to Player C, who comes alone with the goalkeeper and scores. Then Player B gets the assist, while Player A gets the second assist.

Second assists can be recorded when an assist has also been recorded for the goal.

Second assists are a separate 3Steps statistic and are not part of the regular official match statistics in handball.

Save

Select Save when the goalkeeper saves a shot that would otherwise have gone into the goal.

You record:

  1. Which team made the save

  2. Who shot

  3. Where on the court the shot was taken

  4. Where in the goal the shot hit

The save is recorded for the goalkeeper who is active in the match view. Simultaneously, the shot is recorded as a miss on goal for the shooter.

A shot that goes wide or hits the post should not be recorded as a save.

If the goalkeeper touches the ball and the touch is decisive in preventing a goal, you record Save – even when the ball goes on to hit the post or go wide.

Miss

Select Miss when a shot does not go into the goal and the goalkeeper does not save it.

You record:

  1. Who shot

  2. Where on the court the shot was taken

  3. Where the ball went

3Steps distinguishes between:

  • Miss wide: The ball goes wide of the goal.

  • Shot on post: The ball hits the post or crossbar and does not go into the goal.

If the goalkeeper saves the shot, you should select Save instead.

7-meter throw

Select 7m when a team is awarded a 7-meter throw. The entire situation is recorded in one continuous registration.

You record:

  1. Who was awarded the 7-meter throw

  2. Who caused it, if applicable

  3. Who took the throw

  4. Whether the result was a goal, save, or miss

  5. Where the ball went

Who was awarded the 7-meter throw?

This is the player who was fouled and triggered the decision. The event is recorded as 7m awarded.

Who caused the 7-meter throw?

This is the defensive player who committed the foul leading to the 7-meter throw. You can skip this choice if the player is unknown or if you do not wish to record it.

The result of the throw

  • Goal: Recorded as 7m-goal for the shooter and 7m-goal conceded for the goalkeeper.

  • Save: Recorded as 7m-save for the goalkeeper and 7m-miss for the shooter.

  • Miss: Recorded as 7m-miss. You indicate whether the ball went wide or hit the post.

Technical errors

Select Technical error when the team loses the ball or an attack ends due to an error.

First, select the player who committed the foul. Then, select the type of foul:

  • Passing error: An imprecise or incorrect pass that causes the team to lose the ball.

  • Lost ball: The player loses control of the ball without it being due to a pass.

  • Steps violation: The player takes too many steps with the ball.

  • Double dribble: The player starts dribbling again after having ended the dribble.

  • Offensive foul: The attacking player commits an offensive foul against a defensive player.

  • Illegal screen: An illegal screen that leads to a free throw or loss of possession.

  • Other technical error: Used when none of the other options accurately describe the situation.

Choose the most precise type when the situation is clear. If you are unsure, use Other technical error.

Tackle

Select Tackle when a defensive player stops or breaks up an attacking situation with a clear defensive action.

You record the player who performed the tackle. Then you can record the attacking player who was tackled.

Block

Select Block when a defensive player blocks a shot before it reaches the goal.

You record the player who blocked the shot. Then you can record who had their shot blocked.

A block should not be recorded as a goalkeeper save.

When you record a block, 3Steps simultaneously records shot blocked for the shooter. Therefore, you should not also record the same shot as a Miss.

One final result per shot

Every shot must have one final result. Select the event that best describes why the shot went in or did not go in. 3Steps automatically records the linked events for the goalkeeper, shooter, and any defensive player.

  • The ball goes into the goal: Select Goal.

  • The goalkeeper prevents a ball that would otherwise have gone into the goal: Select Save.

  • The goalkeeper's touch sends the ball against the post or wide: Select Save.

  • The ball hits the post without a decisive goalkeeper touch: Select Miss and then shot on post.

  • The ball goes wide without a decisive goalkeeper touch: Select Miss and then wide of goal.

  • An outfield player blocks the shot: Select Block – even if the ball then goes wide or hits the post.

Sanction

Select Sanction when a player receives a personal sanction.

First, select the type:

  • Yellow card

  • 2-minute suspension

  • Red card

  • Blue card

Then, select the player who received the sanction.

Timeout

Select Timeout when a team calls a timeout. The event is recorded for the team at the time it is entered.

Record in the same way every time

The most important thing is to be consistent. When the same situations are recorded in the same way from match to match, the statistics become easier to compare and more useful for the team.

If you are unsure during the match, you can correct, delete, or flag an event in the event list.
