What does the save percentage really tell us about a handball goalkeeper?

Save percentage is useful, but must be viewed in conjunction with shot type, placement, game situation, and the team's defensive work.

Save percentage is the most commonly used metric to describe a handball goalkeeper's game. It is useful, but far from tells the whole story about the performance.

To understand the goalkeeper's game, the percentage must be viewed in conjunction with what shots the goalkeeper faced, where the shots came from, and how the team defended.

How save percentage is calculated

Save percentage shows what proportion of shots on goal the goalkeeper saves.

Save percentage = saves ÷ (saves + goals conceded) × 100

A goalkeeper with 12 saves and 18 goals conceded has faced 30 shots on goal. This results in a save percentage of 40.

Shots that go wide, hit the post without a decisive goalkeeper touch, or are blocked by an outfield player are not shots on goal. They are therefore not included in the save percentage.

Why the percentage is not enough

All shots are not equal

A free shot from close range provides different conditions than a pressured shot from a distance. Two goalkeepers can therefore have the same save percentage even if they have faced very different types of finishes.

View the save percentage in conjunction with:

  • Where on the court the shots were taken

  • Where in the goal the shots were placed

  • Whether the shots came from established attack, counter-attack, or arrival

  • Number of 7-meter throws

  • How many shots the data set consists of

The defense affects the goalkeeper's numbers

The goalkeeper and the defense work together. A defense that directs shots towards specific areas, reduces the shooting angle, or creates pressure, can provide the goalkeeper with better working conditions.

Conversely, many breakthroughs, free wing finishes, or counter-attacks can present a difficult shooting scenario. This does not mean that all low percentages can be explained away, but that the assessment must take into account the situations behind them.

Distinguish between different shot types

Shot location

A shot map shows where the finishes come from. It can reveal that the goalkeeper has good returns from certain zones, but challenges from others.

Use this to ask questions: Is the starting position correct? Does the goalkeeper see the ball? Is the defense guiding the shooter towards the solution you have agreed upon?

Placement in goal

When placement is registered, you can examine where goals and saves end up. Patterns over time can provide a better training basis than an overall percentage.

Attack type

Shots from established attack, counter-attack, and arrival place different demands on the goalkeeper. By separating these situations, the coaching staff can see if the result primarily relates to one part of the game.

7-meter throws

7-meter saves should be assessed separately from other saves. The number of attempts is often low, so one save can significantly impact the percentage. Therefore, always look at both the number and the percentage.

Use a sufficiently large sample size

One game can provide a skewed picture. A goalkeeper might face few shots, very good chances, or an opponent with a specific shooting profile.

Over several games, it becomes easier to distinguish random variations from patterns. Preferably compare the goalkeeper with their own previous periods and with similar game situations, not just with other goalkeepers.

The goalkeeper's contribution doesn't stop at the save

The goalkeeper is also part of the team's attack initiation. A controlled save, quick restart, or precise outlet pass can create a counter-attack or a clear scoring opportunity.

How to use goalkeeper statistics in training

  1. Find a pattern over several games.

  2. Limit the pattern to shot location, placement, or attack type.

  3. View the situations in conjunction with the defensive work.

  4. Emphasize technical or tactical aspects the goalkeeper can influence.

  5. Create a specific exercise and follow up on the development.

Example: If many goals come low from the same zone, the goalkeeper coach can investigate the starting position, balance, and reaction in these situations. At the same time, the team should check if the defense is giving the shooter the finish you want.

The best goalkeeper analysis combines numbers and situations

Save percentage is a good starting point, but a weak conclusion to the analysis. Use it to find where to look, and use shot profile, game situation, and handball-specific assessment to understand the performance.
